SSC Junior Engineer (Civil) is one of the most popular government exams for civil engineering diploma and degree holders in India. Conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, it recruits Junior Engineers for central government departments like CPWD, MES, BRO, Central Water Commission and Farakka Barrage Project.
The 2026 notice was issued on 2 September 2026 for a tentative 1,748 vacancies. Applications run from 2 to 22 September 2026, Paper-I (CBE) is proposed for 2 to 6 November 2026 as per the SSC notice of 1 October 2026; the Paper-II date has not been announced yet.
Selection happens through two computer-based papers. Paper-I is 200 questions for 200 marks and is only QUALIFYING — it shortlists you. Paper-II is 100 questions for 300 marks of pure Civil & Structural Engineering, and that paper alone decides the merit list.

ℹ️ Paper-II became a CBT (objective) from the 2023 cycle onward — it is no longer descriptive. Each question is worth 3 marks, and a wrong one costs a full mark. Paper-I is only qualifying; the merit list is drawn from Paper-II alone. Minimum qualifying marks in each paper: UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, all other categories 20%.

- ✓Degree or 3-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognised university/institute. Some posts — Border Roads Organisation among them — accept a diploma only with two years of experience in planning, execution or maintenance of civil works.
