Note on figures. GSDP, per-capita income and growth rates change every year; this note concentrates on structure, clusters and stable facts. For any question that quotes a number, check the latest Economic Survey of Punjab.

1. Structure of the economy

Sector Role
Primary (agriculture and allied) Historically the backbone; large share of employment; wheat, rice, cotton, dairy
Secondary (industry) Dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) — textiles, hosiery, engineering goods, steel re-rolling, sports goods, bicycles, agro-processing
Tertiary (services) Growing; trade, transport, IT, tourism, banking, education and health
  • Punjab is an agriculture-led state with relatively little heavy industry because it has few minerals and is far from ports.
  • It is a high per-capita income state in the north, though growth has slowed relative to other states since the 1990s.
  • Remittances from the Punjabi diaspora (Doaba especially) are a significant inflow.
