- Seasonal or second capitals: Himachal Pradesh (Shimla and Dharamshala), Maharashtra (the winter legislative session at Nagpur), Uttarakhand (Dehradun and Gairsain), and J&K (Srinagar and Jammu). Chandigarh is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana and is itself a Union Territory.
- States formed recently: Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand (2000); Telangana (2 June 2014, the 29th state — after the 2019 J&K reorganisation, the total is 28 states and 8 UTs).
