Scalars and vectors

  • Scalar — magnitude only (mass, length, time, work, energy, temperature).
  • Vector — magnitude and direction, obeying the parallelogram law (force, displacement, velocity, acceleration, moment).

Representation

  • Unit vector .
  • Position vector of point : ; vector .
  • Direction cosines , , with ; direction ratios are proportional to .
  • Zero (null) vector, equal, collinear (parallel) and coplanar vectors.

Addition and section formula

  • Addition by triangle/parallelogram law; commutative and associative.
  • Section formula — point dividing AB internally in ratio :

(midpoint: ; centroid of a triangle: ).

Dot (scalar) product

FormulaDot product
  • Angle:
  • Scalar projection of on : ; vector projection:
  • Work done by force through displacement :

Properties: commutative; distributive; ; etc.; ; .

Cross (vector) product

FormulaCross product

is perpendicular to both vectors (right-hand rule).

  • Area of parallelogram with adjacent sides , : ; area of triangle:
  • Moment (torque) of force acting at point with position about the origin:
  • Angular velocity:
  • Lagrange identity:

Properties: anti-commutative ; distributive; not associative; , , ; ; .
